Keep in mind that doing nothing will kill you in this game if youve run out of energy. It does conserve health, but theres no way to refill your bar or use health pots. Without a way to recover energy, we often found that enemies would get the jump on us and get extra hits in, so it was no walk in the park. Also, the whip has no fully automatic fire-sending mode like in previous games, so youll have to manually time your fireballs and lure enemies in order to line them up for a powerful, unavoidable, fire attack.
For a while after the credits rolled, I was a kid again, awed by a Nintendo DS with a wonderful feel and play control. After turning the game off, I was inspired to start a new playthrough with a brand new Belmont and the help of Mario Maker. Between a well-timed powerup and some well-timed ice spell, I went from a measly 10/0 to double digits in no time at all. It was then I realized that the on-screen difficulty suggestions were based on how many unique enemies I had accumulated in that stage. I started to see the business side of things. How did I become so good at this game? I had been playing it over and over. I was reaping the benefits of hundreds of plays. Every enemy I encountered repeated the same pattern, they started at a given spot on the battlefield, they walked in a straight line for a period of time, and they died. I eventually learned their patterns, built up my combos, and filled my save file to capacity. The constant use of this formula made me a machine, and I knew that I could easily complete the game with ease. The real purpose of a game like this is not to give the player endless monotonous gameplay, but to have a fun, challenging time. It wasnt until I finished the game and entered a chatroom that I started to appreciate the subtle differences. I had to log back in again and do a search to find that no matter how many times I lose, I will always fall into the same pit. Overall, The Adventure ReBirth is a very polished game that is essentially identical to its ancestor. At this point, the comparisons stop, but the similarities will stick with the player.
Another mode, which is really geared towards hardcore gamers, is the "Real Mode". In this mode, the player can set the number of lives and runs on the screen. They can also increase or decrease the difficulty of the game. Basically, if you're worried about saving your score, this is the mode to be in. The controls are a bit different than previous games. For starters, jumping isnt exactly this game, not as automated as previous series titles. Rather than pressing an assigned button to jump, you have to time your jump, pressing the attack button just before you press up to jump. Each whip can be changed to a straight jump by pressing the d-pad in the right quarter, and when used in conjunction with the jump, it allows for a quick ascent or descent. Unfortunately, because of the difference in the timing, it takes a bit of practice to get a feel for how the system works. This particular jump allows for a larger jump height than previous games. Its also considerably faster than other games. This is because the stamina system has been replaced by a whip power meter, and the amount of whip energy you generate each hit depends on the whip length you use. The longer the whip, the faster the speed it travels. Next, in this game, the whip also serves as the opening for the first whip-beating combo. Completing these sequences by either whipping an enemy out of reach or landing a successful hit will fill up the meter at the bottom of the screen, which can be drained by enemies or traps.
