despite this, a remarkable number of americans say they are more patriotic than their brothers and sisters in britain. over two-thirds of british citizens describe themselves as patriots; only a third of americans feel the same. i wonder why that is? is it the greater proportion of elderly and older voters? is it the greater knowledge of the bad things that happen to the united states? is it our greater knowledge that communism was a bad thing? or are the foreigners just more cynical?

if the west wants to survive i think the minimum it should do is stop pretending that it is anything other than one of the dominant religious and cultural forces in the world, and confront its true position, which is that of the number one imperial power. essentially, the western world accepts that it has a special status - not that its right to exist will be defended, but that its privileges will not be taken away and that it has a right to a say in its own future. (someone like me who wants to say this can say it because i live in the west and am free to speak my mind.) but the rest of the world has no choice but to accept western dominance and the things that go with that, even though they dislike what they see.

i think the west is losing its moral compass. it has forgotten where it came from, it doesnt respect its self-image, it doesnt value itself. its beloved leaders are disreputable. its journalists have lost interest in proper journalism. its celebrities are like the swollen pride of a hare. i do not say this passionately; i say it with mild amusement. but for all its debauchery, the west has a culture, a literature, a sensibility, a set of values which is unique. its not something that can be easily replaced, or easily replaced by anyone else. culture is the furnace in which all intellectual stuff is shaped. it is something which transcends nations and races. (i think this is why non-western values cannot and will not ever really replace western ones. and this alone can explain why i think the usa has got to where it is.

president obama himself has made the case for improving security at diplomatic facilities. a number of u.s. diplomatic facilities have made the case for improving security. weve reached a critical moment for the safety and security of our personnel serving abroad. as recent events demonstrate, terrorist networks are actively looking for ways to harm us abroad, and danger still exists that wasnt detected in the hours or days before last year s tragic attacks. but more than four years since the 9/11 attacks, the united states is safer and more secure than it was before those attacks. and, by all accounts, we are better prepared to defend ourselves today than we were on 9/11, when it was clear that al-qaeda could strike in any of our cities. our citizens deserve to live in a world where they can travel freely and their loved ones are secure in our diplomatic facilities. they deserve to be protected as they represent the united states overseas and treat others with dignity and respect. as someone who served in the army and as the president of the overseas citizens services council, i know that we must advance the security of the american people abroad. my son was born in belfast in 1958, and he remembers being taught that all irishmen are catholics and all northern irishmen are protestants. and so he was taught to despise himself, his friends, his country, because of the religion he was born into. that wasnt right. we must never turn our backs on people who suffer from discrimination and prejudice. that was easy to say. rights of religious equality in reality is not really that simple. it is, if you are born into one religion, you are covered by anothers laws. but that doesnt make it ok to trample over the rights of others or to preach your nonsense to those whose heritage is not your own. and it does not mean that the other religion is inferior. it is simply one, not the other; not necessarily inferior as often people use that argument. but no religion can be enforced on others. it is not a good idea. 5ec8ef588b
