assimil continues to be a favorite choice among many beginning language students. however, the latest version that is currently available, assimil modern french, is not the choice for me. assimil's style of teaching is different for french than it is for other languages. you will find that all the lessons are followed by a paragraph of questions and exercises based on the vocabulary and grammar presented in the lesson. it is a very structured way of learning french. for example, it is much easier to build the future tenses than it is for languages like spanish where the past tense is used much more. i think the reason assimil is so successful is that it provides a step-by-step style of learning that is impossible to beat.
i have not ordered these, but have bought them from amazon. i used them as a listening resource in high school. i think they would be a good way to learn a language if you were interested in a combination of spoken and written russian. they are also helpful for learning vocabulary, like all of the late 20th century versions of the assimil series. they are very similar to the assimil russian with toil but at the end of each sentence there is a longer time for your own research. not all of the lessons in the russian without toil series have recordings, but that is ok because you should be doing the same research anyway. if you find the silence to be too distracting, you can always include your own audio track (as i did with the french lessons in this article). i think the trouble with modern languages is that there are so many options and there is not a single way to learn them, as you choose your path depending on what experience you already have. it is similar to the way you can study film, where you choose the type of film to watch depending on your own experience. if you do not see movies and tv, then you will be left with no options.
