MIT has made an initial design for the reactor using a spherical geometry with a mantle of liquid lithium beryllium fuel. The reactor would be able to fission both uranium and thorium, but at the moment MIT is focused on the latter. The reactor design can currently be found on the ARC reactor web site. The latest reactor design was shown at the ARC 99 conference held in the Mile High stadium last month.

The reactor design essentially uses liquid metal as fuel, moderator, shielding, and heat exchange medium. The liquid metal can be precisely controlled, allowing it to absorb neutrons, which it then fuses together to generate even more heat. MIT is planning on putting much of the construction and development effort into designing the reactor itself. Even if the reactor itself is relatively easy to build, actually implementing such a device will be much more challenging. That's where the PR and outreach departments come in.
