Alexander Rudin, who made his Decca recording in March 2004, is well liked by lovers of Mozarts music, but the present production is a disappointment. Martha Argerich, Joan Dorn as Donna Anna, and Diana Damrau as Zerlina all appear plump and overweight. They seem to have no interest in singing at all. In their absence, Cristina Deutekom is stunningly beautiful, which she needs to be: her role, as Donna Anna, is a largely thanksgiving soprano. Riccardo Muti, the conductor, is even more slight than usual. His Don Giovanni (from that production) is a rather insipid idea of the character. Natalie Dessay is sweet and winsome as Elvira. Kirsten Flagstad, Odile, and Mariusz Kwiecien provide a lot of chutzpah, as does Tone Bradys Donna Elvira. The bass is at times quite heavy, including when he is supposed to sound like a lion. The orchestra is excellent, playing with a winsome melody. The entire production has charisma to spare.
The Viennese Philharmonic provides a good rendition of the Sinfonia and the first two arias of the London version, although the latter rumbles and is not quite as articulate as the first. The high point of the live recording is Ottavio Sguins performance of Sechs Kleine Motetten, which was recorded in 2003 in Cologne. Of those, number 4, O Sanctissima Anna, is the most memorable in German. The arias I anticipate in this disc are the second two, whose timbre is less dynamic and whose metre is clearer than that of the first. And Gardiner remains superb in his final aria, Verdi-like in the way that his language is refracted in the orchestra and the way his soprano rises to that final high note.
