As for the raw conversion, on the whole Lightroom 5 is no better than Lightroom 4. The process of converting raw files to DNG files went about the same speed as it did with Lightroom 4. It is a little slower than other RAW converters at the moment, but I believe this will be addressed in future releases. I did notice that if the raw file size is large (about 200 MB or more), the process was a little slower. With DNG files, this shouldn’t be the case, but I’ve sensed that Lightroom 5’s batch conversion has a lot of holes in the logic that was error-prone and created broken.dng files. As a result, there are both grey and blue rectangles and masks in some areas of the resulting image. I am not sure if this is an implementation issue with Lightroom 5 or a result of the images being too large. It’s the only instance in my personal experience where I’ve felt Lightroom 5 was not entirely reliable in handling photos.
Adobe Sensei also works toward improving Lightroom’s performance. In testing, I’ve seen it achieve its goal. Lightroom 5 is more than twice as fast as Lightroom 4. Lightroom 5 is about 8.5 times faster than my previous version. This makes Lightroom 5 one of the faster implementations of this piece of software. I didn’t experience any downsides to this speed increase. Adobe claims Lightroom 5 is up to 3 times faster than the current version in developing DNG images. That said, I don’t really use this feature in Lightroom. In the interest of fairness, I compared the image development time taken by Lightroom 5 to Lightroom 4 on a 1.9 GB set of RAW files. This represents two hits to Lightroom’s import engine, one being the conversion, the other being the development of the images. The average time taken by Lightroom 5 to process an image was about five seconds for the conversion. DNG files took about an average of one second to process. Expression Media Max CS6 took about 1.5 seconds to process an image. Lightroom has about the same performance, and what’s more, it doesn’t need to index the pictures, which is good because that can take an average of 5-10 minutes for large numbers of images.
