Layers are the cornerstone of all editing and are a fundamental part of both raster and vector graphics editing. You work with layers to create complicated images, and later in this chapter, you'll find out how you work with them to add elements to images. FIGURE 2-1: The Layers dialog box is a front-and-center resource for all your editing needs. ## Creating Layers Creating a layer is easy. Just click the New Layer icon or press Ctrl+Shift+N. The New Layer dialog box, shown in Figure 2-2, opens, presenting you with a menu of options to help you name the new layer. Click OK to create it. FIGURE 2-2: Type a name for the new layer. If you click OK without creating the layer, the New Layer dialog box closes and you see nothing happen, as shown in the left of Figure 2-3. If you want to create a new layer, keep the dialog box open by pressing Ctrl+Shift+N repeatedly. FIGURE 2-3: You need a layer for any raster editing.
Elements was initially released in 2013, but it was later rebranded to Adobe Photoshop when the original was retired. This ensures consistency in the naming convention across all editions of Photoshop. However, it is not built in the same way as professional Photoshop with limited access to advanced features. Elements is available in both Windows and macOS. Adobe Photoshop Elements is available in three editions: Starter, Standard and Premium. For most people, the Starter edition is appropriate. The Basics of Adobe Photoshop Elements Adobe Photoshop Elements is very intuitive and requires little prior knowledge of Photoshop. It uses the same logic as Photoshop and allows you to do most of the same tasks. If you have used a previous version of Photoshop, you can use elements instead and there is no need to buy Elements - in fact, the price reflects that. Adobe Photoshop Elements uses the same logic as Photoshop The following is a guide to the basics and some common tasks for people who have no previous knowledge of elements. Before you start, make sure you have a friend in the same room as you. Any changes to a project are not remembered by Adobe so having someone else looking over your shoulder is a great safety net. Elements is great for people who need to edit a small number of photos If you have a project that requires a lot of photo editing, Photoshop Elements may not be the best choice. Photoshop comes with a range of features including filters, layers, and tools for text, shapes and other items. Photoshop Elements can’t compare to all of these features. You can use Photoshop Elements for projects that are between 10 to 100 images. If you’re doing a lot of projects that are more than 100 photos, Photoshop is probably a better choice. There are 4 main editing tools in Elements: Add a File: Choose a photo or a document that you want to use. You can edit it directly if you have it saved locally. Fill an Area: Create a new area where you can add text or shapes. Tools: Choose a tool to edit the image. There are many types of tools, including: Adjustment: Change the brightness, contrast or other aspects of the photo Effects: Add an effect to the photo (e.g. vignette, blur, emboss or convert to black and white) Adjustments: Add a border 05a79cecff
Zerlina Maxwell Zerlina Maxwell (born August 24, 1986) is an American professional basketball player in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). She was selected second overall in the 2011 WNBA Draft. Biography High school Maxwell attended Buford High School in Buford, Georgia. As a senior, she led the team to a 29–2 record and was named Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year and Parade All-American. She helped her team to back-to-back state titles as a junior (26–3) and senior (31–1). She went on to play at the University of Georgia. In her freshman season, Maxwell played 32 games and averaged 9.0 points per game. She finished her freshman season second in the country in free throw percentage (.846) and third in field goal percentage (.525) and three-point shooting (.436). She was also among the best scorers in the country, ranking second in the SEC in scoring. As a sophomore, Maxwell averaged 16.0 points per game, which ranked fifth in the SEC. Her career-high of 22 points was a team-high three times, including a career-high of 26 points versus Tennessee. She also topped the 200-point mark as a sophomore. Maxwell scored 25 points, and grabbed 15 rebounds, as Georgia defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies 77–53 in the Elite Eight game at the 2004 NCAA Tournament. That team went on to defeat UCLA in the Final Four, but was defeated by Tennessee in the championship game. In the 2005 Women's Final Four, Maxwell's Georgian team lost to the Baylor Lady Bears in the championship game. The Georgia Bulldogs were seeded fifth. In 2005, Maxwell scored a career-high 42 points versus the Duke Blue Devils. In 2006, Maxwell tallied 13 points and 11 rebounds against the Florida Gators. She scored 24 points against the Florida State Seminoles in the same game. Professional career WNBA Charlotte Hornets (2011–2013) On April 2, 2011, Maxwell was drafted second overall in the 2011 WNBA Draft by the Charlotte Bobcats. She scored a season-high 10 points in the Bobcats' loss to the
Gonadotropin releasing hormone agonist pituitary tumour surgery in the management of a nonfunctioning pituitary adenoma. Most gonadotroph pituitary adenomas (GPA) are nonfunctioning (NFPA) tumours and it is the standard treatment to perform sellar exploration followed by tumour removal. The efficacy of routine sellar exploration and removal of GPA is uncertain. The aim of this study was to assess clinical and biochemical outcome after surgery of GPA. The medical records of GPA patients who underwent sellar exploration from 1995 to 2011 were analysed. Overall, 67 GPA (63 NFPA) were identified. Forty patients (59.7%) had NFPA with a mean age at surgery of 45.6 years, (30-77 y). Sellar exploration revealed NFPA in 53 patients (78.8%). Gross total resection was achieved in 42 patients (62.7%). Negative radiological-pathological margins were achieved in 37 patients (56.1%). In total, 38 patients had postoperative radiotherapy. The median follow-up was 58.1 months (12-156 mo). At five years, surgery had an operative morbidity and mortality rate of 24.3% (95% CI 14.9-34.6) and 2.9% (95% CI 0.4-5.4) respectively. Recurrence was observed in 20 patients (29.9%) with a median time-to-recurrence of 18.3 months (95% CI 4.7-31.8). There were 22 recurrences (52.3%) in NFPA patients versus 6 recurrences (37.5%) in microadenomas (P = 0.22). At five years, there was also no difference in progression free survival in NFPA patients who had gross total resection compared to those who did not (37.3 vs. 44.8%; P = 0.65). In microadenoma patients, there was a significant survival benefit for those with gross total resection (71.7 vs. 52.1%; P = 0.033). This study shows that GPA surgery can be performed with a low morbidity and mortality rate and with long-term remission in a significant number of patients. Gross total resection of NFPA was associated with lower recurrence rates compared to partial resection.Phylogenetic relationships of Streptomyces coelicolor (Streptomycetes) and
