Photoshop is an extremely powerful and enjoyable suite of applications. But when enabled, its power never goes away. It’s too extensive, too complex, too powerful, and too confusing. And it just can’t keep up with what’s happening in the rest of the world. These days, every other image editing suite has nothing to worry about. Photoshop is really only necessary for work that an ordinary software suite, like Lightroom, doesn’t cover as you’d expect. It also has several advantages, but perhaps too much of one single app. When it works well, selecting edit tools in the toolbar is fast. When it doesn’t, the entire process becomes complicated and time-consuming. At the very least, you’re one more mouse click than you should be. With the previous versions of Photoshop, I would have said this app needed immediate retirement. And yet I still opened it every other day. It’s unfair to slam it for becoming less useful. It’s not a bad question though: Is Photoshop still a good app? For a long time, I couldn’t give a straight answer to the question. There was no simple, yes-no answer. Instead, it’s the Mac vs. PC debate in disguise. Photoshop is the de facto app on the Mac, especially for photographers. But the switch to a common PC-based operating system has changed it all. The question now is if Photoshop is still a good solution, or if it’s too unwieldy for you to use. You may well ask yourself the same question. If you’re a customer, the answer is quite simple. Use Lightroom or any other RAW converter, and if you need to make manual changes to an image before it’s ready to go to print or the web, Photoshop is the tool of choice. Now that we’re dealing with Lightroom’s new potential storage space limit of 32GB for free users, Photoshop is probably more necessary than ever. But Photoshop’s severe limitations in comparison with Lightroom and Lightroom’s in comparison with other software all combined tell the same story. Photoshop is, without a doubt, slowing heading down. And unless you can find some way to speed that up and maintain its basic strength, the days of Photoshop are numbered.
Use the Dodge & Burn tool to lighten or darken areas of the image to give it a more unique look. Use the Smudge tool to blend areas together. Use the Burn tool with a large brush size to lighten the image.
The Shadows & Highlights tool is a must-have tool for editing the entire color spectrum of your image. You can use it to adjust the brightness level of your image.
