In addition to the Photoshop software, Photoshop plug-ins offer creative effects that can be applied to an image and saved, making the process faster and more versatile. In some cases, using Photoshop plug-ins is the only way to achieve certain effects. In this chapter, we give you a crash course in key elements of Photoshop, helping you to understand their place and purpose and how to work them. Each element is explained in depth, giving you tips on best practices, a few workflow examples, and things to watch out for. Now, let's get Photoshop. Manual commands Manual commands are quick and simple. After choosing a tool, such as the Brush, the icon appears in a dialog box, as shown in Figure 9-1. Because the program can look somewhat confusing at first, we show you how to get around in Photoshop; we use a few different tools throughout the book. **Figure 9-1:** Use the Brush to work around the edges of an image. Using the Layer Modes Photoshop allows you to apply certain modes to layers, which determine how much you can modify the transparency or blending of a layer. Here's a quick overview of how the modes work: Overlay: In the Overlay mode, you can't see the underlying layer, so if you edit an image in the Overlay mode, you can't see what you've done. Overlays are useful for editing an image in small areas, like correcting skin-color problems, recovering blemishes, and so on. Difference: In the Difference mode, a black layer is added to an image, which is then merged with the underlying layer. The black layer is subtracted from the underlying layer to reveal the areas where the underlying layer is a different color. You can use the Difference mode to fix flaws in a portrait, for example, to reveal where the skin tones are slightly out of place. Lighten/Darken: The Lighten mode is similar to the Difference mode. In the Lighten mode, the darker parts of the image are subtracted from the lighter parts, and the lighter parts remain. In the Darken mode, the darker parts are added to the lighter parts. Some of the shortcuts we use are not that applicable to the web, so I’ll list them anyway: Ctrl+0. Restores a previously edited image to its original state. I recommend using this feature when you want to go back to a previous state before you started editing your images. Ctrl+Shift+0. Reverts all edits made in the current image. I use this a lot if I mess up a file by clicking on it in another tab of Photoshop. Ctrl+Shift+Backspace. Deletes the last command you made in Photoshop. I use this all the time to make a copy of an image I’m working on. Ctrl+Shift+W. Redirects the focus of the currently active layer to the document window. I use this all the time if I want to open a new document. Ctrl+Shift+N. Redirects the focus of the currently active layer to the new document window. I use this a lot when I want to copy and paste a layer from another file. Ctrl+Shift+Arrow keys. Removes the layer from the currently active layer and from the current image. I use this a lot when I want to remove a layer from the currently active image and image. Ctrl+T. Displays the file size of the currently active document. I use this as the size of my images on my blog and to show it to my clients. Image Editing Elements can be used to edit images on the web, but there is not any limit on how big your image can be. Description of the Related Art In recent years, there is proposed a photometric detector called a “single-pixel sensor” using a photodiode for converting an optical signal into an electrical signal (see, for example, Japanese Unexamined Patent Application Publication No. 2006-234650). The “single-pixel sensor” is a photodiode for receiving light from a light emitting element and generating a current in proportion to the amount of received light. A plurality of photodiodes are arranged in a matrix, and the amount of received light is detected by electrically detecting the generated currents. As illustrated in FIGS. 4A to 4D, a photodiode array D3 comprising three photodiodes P31, P32 and P33, and a light receiving surface PD31 facing the photodiode P31 are arranged in a matrix. The photodiode P31 is connected to a control line CL31 through a readout line R31 and a signal line S31. The photodiode P32 is connected to a control line CL32 through a readout line R32 and a signal line S32. Its anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and pro-apoptotic activities have been most evident in the treatment of dry eye disease, particularly its signs, symptoms, and functional aspects, including the reduction of aqueous tear secretion and improvement of tear osmolarity. The ability of bromelain to reduce the levels of inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-alpha, IL-1beta, IL-6, IL-12, macrophage inflammatory protein-1alpha, and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor) and other pro-inflammatory markers (such as nitric oxide and matrix metalloproteinases), in the aqueous humor suggests the presence of a potent inhibitory effect on various pathways involved in inflammatory processes, including matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activation, tissue remodeling, and bacterial adherence. These events may be correlated to the mechanisms involved in the protection of corneal epithelial cells against apoptosis and/or repair/renewal processes in human ocular tissue. In addition, bromelain appears to be well tolerated in humans with no significant side effects when used either topically or orally.
