What Is Photoshop? The most commonly known feature of Photoshop is the ability to do image manipulation. Photoshop allows for many features that most people use on a regular basis. There are different editing windows for different tasks. The Elements window, for example, is great for adding text. You can use the History window to access previous versions of the image. You can use the Channel Mixer to split channels of color to create a grayscale image. You can use the Red-Eye Correction Tool for removing red-eye from images. You can use the Tilt-Shift, Warp, and Animation functions to easily create photo effects. And there is support for inserting logos into images. Photoshop is a full-featured image editing software for digital photography, video, graphic design, and print. It has become very popular and many professionals use it to edit images. Here is a list of some of the most popular aspects of Photoshop: Layer-based editing system This is the part of the image editing that you will be using the most. Layers are the base for any editing. Layers are unique to Photoshop and you cannot edit a layer in any other program. Layers control the flow and visibility of the different elements and objects in a photo. You can easily switch back and forth between individual layers by simply toggling the layers on and off. You will even be able to create your own layers, much like how you could create your own Workspace on another software. This is where you will be manipulating each layer to create images and edits. You will be able to apply adjustments to each individual layer including levels, curves, and spot healing. You will also be able to crop each layer in any direction. Adjustments You can quickly adjust many aspects of an image in Photoshop including levels, curves, and contrast. By using the adjustments, you can easily lighten or darken large sections of an image, much like how you can adjust the exposure in a photo. Although the adjustments are called levels, this is not where you will actually adjust the overall brightness and contrast. The adjustments are used to darken or brighten an image, not to adjust the exposure. However, you will be able to edit certain parts of an image within the adjustments menu. For example, you can quickly adjust the exposure on a red-eye effect. You can also quickly apply a color correction to accent a different part of an image.
If you want to edit images in Photoshop Elements you have to use your mouse or keyboard. You can use your mouse but you have to use the mouse wheel on the scroll bar, or keyboard shortcuts. To use keyboard shortcuts you have to use a computer with dedicated keyboard. We explain how to use each tool in Photoshop Elements 6.1.
