a very interesting new zombie film from the czech republic is the apocalypse, which was released in 2008. its a low-budget indie film, with a small cast of characters, and although its a dark, moody film, its also got some truly weird, morbid moments. its not really a zombie film, but its definitely a zombie influenced film, and its perhaps a better description of what 28 weeks later is than any other zombie movie out there.

the last days of frankie machine is a good example of a low-budget argento, in that the films budget is barely enough to cover the costs of a single set. a quick and dirty zombie flick, it tells the story of an american serviceman killed in the vietnam war who returns to america, only to discover that his wife has had a child by another man. the dead serviceman devours her in rage, and the woman, along with her child, goes on a killing spree in the suburbs of chicago. the narrative is a bit vague, and the characters are almost entirely generic, but the film is quite entertaining, and a throwback to the gialli films of the early 70s, with some really cheesy b-movie nods and a good old-fashioned killer. its one of those films that you watch and youre like, "what was that about?"

the second evil dead movie is far more interesting than its sequel, as it features a character so good he almost makes the first one not suck. the deadites are still undead skeletons who suck the brains of their victims, but ash is now a former army ranger who has a vendetta against them after the army failed to protect him from them. ash is assisted by a young girl named lucy, who is a hardass and a real kick-ass heroine. she also has a pretty cool father named john, who is like the popsicle from the first film, and ash can walk around with a hockey stick that shoots chainsaws. these zombies look pretty cool, as their heads are always split down the middle so that their faces are always in mid-suck. i love this movie, and it is one of the better films of its kind. jim vorel let the right one in is one of the most influential films of the last decade. it is the story of a young girl who goes into the woods to visit a friend, and ends up getting way more than she bargained for. directed by tomas alfredson, it serves as the perfect example of what a true vampire film should be. yes, its literally about a vampire, but it also has plenty of plot elements that would fit perfectly into any horror film. theres a decent story about a girl trying to find her way home, and of course she runs into a scary monster in the woods. and you know, it gets a little bit gross, but the whole time it feels like your watching a horror film. this is why let the right one in is so influential. it works because it doesnt feel like a horror film. its got vampires, but its not a slasher movie. its got scary monsters, but its not a monster movie. its got gore, but its not just gore for gore's sake. instead, its about a young girl who is way more than she seems, and she gets in way over her head. alfredson never really lets on how bad things are, nor does he ever explain what the creatures are. instead, the audience is left to draw its own conclusions. the story is simple, but it works. jim vorel 5ec8ef588b
