Such implants are typified by a post and an abutment having a central, threaded portion. Typically, the abutment or the implant is implanted in a jaw bone, where it is surgically attached to an outer surface of the jaw bone by a screw. The post is then inserted into and screwed into the central threaded portion of the abutment. The post provides the required length of the implant and supports the denture or other prosthetic device, e.g., a bridge. The most common post material is stainless steel. While this material provides very high tensile strength, the material also allows for small amounts of corrosion. As a result, small amounts of the metallic ions from the post surface can be transferred to the jaw bone, which then presents a possible source of corrosion of the bone and peri-implant tissues. Recently, a new post material has been developed having better biocompatibility. This material is an extremely hard composite material having an acrylic core coated with hydroxyapatite. Hydroxyapatite is naturally occurring calcium phosphate, which is formed by the bodies of animals including humans. The hydroxyapatite coating provides a good biocompatible surface, which prevents corrosion and irritant transfer from the post surface to the bone. As noted, the post material is screwed into the central, threaded portion of the implant. This use of threaded members has a number of disadvantages, including longer surgical time, longer time of healing prior to the use of dental prosthetics, and a lack of stability or retention of the post in the central, threaded portion of the implant.
