What is WNS? The Wild Animal Reservation Center is one of the world’s only centers to collect data and research white-nose syndrome in bats. WNS is a complex and potentially deadly fungal disease that has killed millions of North American bats since its discovery in 2006. It is thought that WNS may have diminished bat populations worldwide for decades. There are three confirmed forms of WNS. Although there is no cure, natural behavior of the Indiana bat provides promising methods of control. Despite the fact that scientists have found no evidence of white-nose syndrome in domestic animals or wildlife outside of caves, it is still important to pay attention to the animals in our care. Indoor (mouse and rat) facilities and kennels, along with bat houses and structures, are prime breeding grounds for WNS.

How many people are affected by this disease? The number of people that have WNS can vary. In the U.S., it’s estimated that 5 to 10 million bats have died. The data for different countries is not well-documented, making it difficult to estimate how many people are affected by it. While the most recent deaths are the result of WNS, bat mortality from disease and injuries from human activities is estimated to be much higher. Although we do not always realize the impact of these occurrences, they are present year-round. The Center for Biological Diversity believes that WNS is the largest documented wildlife mortality crisis in North America’s history.

How long has this been going on? In May 2010, the first signs of white-nose syndrome in bats in the northeastern United States were discovered in the Green Mountains of Vermont, and by the end of 2010, there was clear evidence of the disease in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Michigan.
