After a fiery debate in the Commons in July, the government finally announced plans last week to endorse the vaping industry’s e-cigarettes as an acceptable nicotine delivery device (NDD). The move is arguably bad for the health of the country – and bad for business.
As things stand, Britain may end up being the first country in the world to declare e-cigarettes to be an acceptable way for smokers to quit. This could send the market, in which one-in-five people in England now use e-cigarettes, into a tailspin.
Although they’re now given the green light, e-cigarettes won’t be ready for circulation until 2017. That is more than 10 years after the UK’s legal ban on smoking in public places and over double the time it took the government to finalise a restriction on the promotion of conventional cigarettes in 2010.
When they do hit the shelves, they will come with a high price tag – and most users will use them for decades. This will have a huge impact on e-cigarette makers, whose plans for a global takeover of the market are now put into question.
“We’ll be out of business in the next five years if the government bans them,” said Martin Dock, the chief executive of Halo. “People will switch to traditional cigarettes.”
