also on the dvd there are two fun bonus features. the first is a video essay from john howe on the visual special effects. howe is perhaps best known for creating the prosthetic eye. the second is a commentary by the director, writer and producer. theres not much of a difference between the commentaries on the 2nd and 3rd movies, and theres not too much new material on this one, hobbit extended edition, but it is still great to hear from these key crew members.
although the hobbit: an unexpected journey has some rough edges, the minor nits are few and far between. and jackson and his crew have delivered an entertaining, successful movie. the extended edition of the 3rd one is some of the best stuff ive seen in a movie since the extra-long scene in the last harry potter movie. i just cant say enough good things about it. as well as the opening of the second movie, the extended material in the 3rd one of 'the hobbit' is just as fun to watch. i cant wait to see the final trailer and dvd for the hobbit trilogy as the films are bound to get really, really long (and possibly have some really, really good moments in the 3rd one). now, all we need is some extended material for the 4th one!
article source: the hobbit: an unexpected journey was a good film, i enjoyed it, but the fact that it had no voice over was just plain stupid. i did enjoy the extended edition though, as it did add a few things that i think they should've added in the original cut. personally, i love the extended edition of the hobbit. it took me a while to get over the voice overs. it doesn't seem right having a character speak in a foreign language, but i like the fact that you can hear exactly what the character is saying and you don't have to rely on the narration. i don't think that they made it too long. it kept the story moving and there were no dull scenes. and as the end credits started rolling, there was a bit of a surprise. what i thought was the first trailer was actually the first song from the soundtrack. i thought that was cool and i liked the song, but not as much as i liked the final song in the 3rd part. i personally liked the extended edition of the hobbit. it added a few things that i thought they should've added in the original cut. i enjoyed the extended edition of the hobbit. the only thing i'm not a fan of is the fact that they added the trolls in the scene with the trolls and wargs. i know that i'm not the only one who thought that it was a little weird that one of my favorite scenes was taken out of the film. i also didn't like that they had the longest sequence in the entire film with the mouth of sauron. i think it was about 20-30 minutes long. that's an awful lot of time for sauron to be talking. the first hobbit is great! i actually like the second and third movie, i think they went a little too long and got caught up in the hobbit world and forgot about the other worlds. i'm in the same boat as you! i wanted to like the hobbit 3rd one more, but it was too long for me. i still like the hobbit 2nd and 3rd movies, but i never really liked the hobbit 1st one.
