the little movie i want to talk about is the world is not enough, because it's an absolute sleazebag of a gangster movie, but it's a great gangster movie, and it seems like something that will really land for audiences in france and elsewhere. it has some of the bravura dramatic heft of all the president's men, the kind that could turn even the jadedest capitalist into a partisan of the federal government. pierce brosnan never plays a bond so good as he plays him in this movie. he is a fully-drawn character that some people believe may actually be bond in drag. that's good for brosnan, because he's a better actor than most of the bond lovers out there think. the story, based on an ian fleming novel and written by novelist jeffrey archer, is set in burma. brosnan plays bond; the actress who co-starred in this movie, sophie marceau, is a french heiress kidnapped and turned into a love slave by the villain, renard. bond's now charged with delivering a message to the wife of a british ambassador, who is held hostage by renard, who plans to blow up an oil pipeline in burma to drive up oil prices around the world. if you've ever read the original fleming novels you'll know that "burma" refers to the name fleming gave his version of the ugly imperialist reality of the country of the same name, but the irony is that the same man, fleming, also wrote for years about the wonderful values of british imperialism in india. in fact, burma is a backhanded reference to india, with its own actual history of brutal oppression under british rule.
this guy is a sadist. he doesn't just blow up the pipeline; he blows up the embassy and takes the french ambassador captive along with the heiress. the earlier bond films, the ones starring roger moore, were ultimately dedicated to the feminist principle that it's a good idea if men and women treat each other with tenderness and respect. the film ends with the heiress, in a truly inspiring if hard-to-swallow moment for the film, willingly marrying renard out of her desperate need to escape his clutches. at the end of all of this, the film feels like a genuine achievement of social justice.
