Galactic Civilizations III is an action strategy video game set in the Galactic Civilizations III universe that allows the player to control all aspects of a Galactic Civilization. It includes the three great civilizations from the base game, 12 new planets and a large number of stars and asteroids for the player to colonize. The game also includes great improvements, game rules updates, ships and weapons, new types of planets, new types of research, new effects and a large number of new units. Galactic Civilizations III is a Free to Play strategy video game released by Stardock that offers a Civilization inspired theme with a difference. In this game, players must build a star empire across the galaxy, subjugating planets and entire star systems, and exert their influence on the galaxy by waging war and expanding their influence. The player controls the game from the perspective of a leader of a civilization. When the game begins, the player must select their starting civilization, select their star system, and then select which planets are theirs to colonize. This is the most important decision as the game progresses and the time for the player to gain dominion over the galaxy. What's new in Galactic Civilizations® II: Ultimate Edition:
- is now available for download. And although this download is the "ultimate" edition, you'll notice some of the same bugs and issues that you might have found in Milkyway's official Galactic Civilizations® II beta test (the beta itself can also be downloaded here, if you'd like).
Specifically, some of the default selection of races are different from the official versions, and there are some other major players like the Australian Natives that aren't included in this version. Having said all that, I did consider my own playthrough a beta, and it was generally enjoyable. I had some issues, such as choosing to multi-select leaders early on, and some things seem to be bugged (which is why I opted to download this version!), but overall, I found it fun, and I enjoyed choosing my race.
A couple of updates are being actively worked on. The first is that I'm looking to add a multiplayer portion to Milkyway: Galactic Civilizations® II. Bringing online play - whether via internet, LAN, or even a client shared between 2 players - makes 'galactic wars' and multiplayer gameplay very much more enjoyable, and the aim is to bring in more players in this version. The second update is that, although the version that is currently available has everything complete, the full 1.01 update contains a major overhaul of the Galactic Technologies, which has lead to a lot of code being rewritten. There are also several major bugfixes, but the size of the patch means that it's still taking longer to code; the patch is currently around 45-50meg, and is expected to be complete around the end of March.
Those two things aside, if you're interested in joining in a long-haul epic freeplay, Galactic Civilizations® II: Ultimate Edition is still up for grabs. MySpace and YouTube video is attached below; it's my usual "catch all" media, in case you were interested.
Feel free to browse through the vids and try out the editing features that are available. There are a couple of things that haven't been done with that I'd like to do (eliminate the AI on units so that they're not constantly going on the offense, moving closer to a leader-only multi-player game), but I'm pretty happy with the progress so far.
